What we do:

Support businesses whose R&D Tax Credit claims are being investigated by the Fraud Investigation Service team under HMRCs Code of Practice 9.

How we do it:

Our tax-qualified experts will review both the financial and technical parts of your R&D claim and advise on whether or not your claim is legitimate, in line with the HMRC guidelines.

If we find the claim to be legitimate and accurate, we will prepare a response to HMRC on your behalf to support and defend your claim.

Why have I received a letter from the FIS?

These letters typically indicate that HMRC suspects significant discrepancies, errors or even fraud in your R&D claims.

There has been an increase in these kinds of investigations recently, due to an increase in fraudulent submissions from both ineligible companies and unscrupulous advisors.

But, if your claim is legitimate and you are able to provide the information that the FIS requires, you should still expect to receive your R&D Tax relief, albeit after a delay.

What should I do next?

Firstly, don’t panic. But it is important to take the letter seriously and respond to HMRC with the requested information promptly. You only get 30 days from the date on the letter.

Every claim needs to be dealt with individually and we strongly recommend seeking support from an expert in the R&D scheme to advise you on the best course of action.

If you’ve received a compliance enquiry on an existing claim, we may be able to support you with this too. Please reach out to our team to discuss further.
